My work questions the epistemological and philosophical foundations of economic theories. This questioning has led me to address the division between individualism and methodological holism, but also between individualism and ontological holism. The criteria of validity of economic theories raise the debate between the deductive-nomological model and the causal explanation. The treatment of these questions is based on the history of economic theories. This recourse to the history of economic thought tends to underline the fact that the criteria of truth evolve with time, and more precisely with the questions posed to economic theories. Hence the incitement to take sides with a specific way of doing the history of thought: the history of thought appears here as the history of the questions that are put to economic theories and not as the history of the answers proposed by economists. Theories on poverty illustrate this point of view.
